FALL FOLIAGE CRUISE 06

The actual planning for this years event started last February when Bob & Barbara Gardner and I drove to Dover, NH to attend the annual Seacoast Calendar meeting. We had two dates to deliver; the Pasta Hop and Fall Foliage Cruise. Bob and I agreed that we would not include the latter in the Seacoast Calendar even though it was included using last years date.

I had already asked to be chairman having enjoyed ten years of events with different themes and locations. The criteria for the event is etched in stone! No more than 50 miles (one way). Must have food and attractions nearby. The first few locations I had in mind were ruled out because of miles and costs to members for food and refreshment. The final choice was just about at the boundary for distance with all other criteria being met. The Bittersweet Farm Restaurant was a great find and the function director was willing to give us everything we asked for. We could have the entire Tavern, we could order from the entire menu (as opposed to select items) and we would be billed in pairs so the hamburg eaters would not be paying for the steak eaters. The Restaurant opens at noon but for us they would open early. Our destination of The Westport River Winery is four miles away and they have tours at 1 and 3pm only. From the beginning I told Dawn to plan on 40 people.

What a pleasant surprise for everyone when 27 Vettes arrived at the big Y in Walpole on Sunday morning, October 15. Three with one occupant for a total of 51, no problem! The caravan got off on time with each Vette having directions, a map, and a menu. It was a Sunday morning and traffic was sparse so we made great time, getting to the restaurant at 11 am. The tables were set up (we called with a head count) and all systems were go. Our girl Dawn does not work Sundays so we were at the mercy of those that served us.

Our caravan finally got back on the road for our trip to the Westport River Winery. We were invited to park on their lawn behind the store but the farm road was in no condition to drive our cars there. We did park on the lawn for event parking and went to the Store and Gift Shop while we waited for our wine tasting. We could participate inside or outside. Craig was excellent describing the six wines we tasted outside. Each of us was given a wine glass to take home as a souvenir. As far as I know no one opted for the 3pm tour of the winery.

At the restaurant I gave handouts of the Tiverton Four Connors, Little Compton areas with a map attached. A splinter group of us drove to Tiverton Four Corners where we parked at the general store and walked the area, ending at Gray’s Ice Cream before leaving for home. My goal for this event was to introduce our members to an area that offers them a chance to explore and be educated in the abundant history it has to offer. I hope I have accomplished this end as we had at least two children in our company. For those that did not explore the area you would find The Westport Brewery and a cold fresh brew as your reward.
