This event has now become a highlight on the social calendars of many Corvette Clubs in New England. The turnout on Friday, June 23 was terrific, particularly since it was raining and forecasts were for flooding, thunder, lightening, hail, and other Biblical torments. Twenty-five Corvette owners were undaunted, however. Their cars stood out like so many jewels in the wet, dark parking lot. No one got wet as the Lot Jockeys ushered all the ladies into the hall under a Corvette umbrella.
This year three trophies were awarded for Corvettes. They went to cars judged by the President (The President’s Passion), the Lot Jockeys, and by Chairman John Dwyer himself. Paul Pearson of NE Corvette Club won the President’s Passion with a precision red C6, while the other awards went to Mal’s new yellow C5 and a gorgeous white 1974 owned by Howie and Robin Sousa, also of NE Corvette, respectively. Lastly, NE Corvette continued it’s "sweep" taking a trophy for Best Club Participation – and what a crowd it was!
The success of this event depends on two things. First is attendance, the number of tickets sold. Second is the raffle which generates the most money for our charity, The Shriners Hospitals for Children. This year’s terrific attendance was achieved through the hard work of John, Mal, and Elaine and the continued and increased support of the other Corvette clubs that participated. The raffle table was laden with over 40 items from hats and t-shirts to oil changes and front-end alignments. A lot of effort goes into accumulating this largess and a lot of generosity on the part of EMCC’s advertisers and sponsors and membership. Finally, it takes a lot of energy and enthusiasm to sell all those tickets and then run the raffles.
The food was hot and plentiful and tasty. The music was great and the dancers never lacked for originality and even some (not much, but some) grace. I really enjoyed John’s high stepping with 8-10 ladies at a time and Ed Forsberg, Mike Campopiano and Jim Gable doing the Electric Slide.
Soooooo, what about the bottom line? Well, here are some figures. 184 tickets were sold. NINETY-NINE were sold to EMCC members. How great is that? Six other Corvette clubs joined us from three states (Bay State, Corvette Club of RI, Corvettes United, Gate City (New Hampshire), New England CC, and South Shore). John reports that $1660 alone was raised on raffles. That’s all the donated items you scrounged, begged, borrowed and stole. And (drum roll) the final figure for the Shriners Hospitals for Children is…….$2995.00
Thank you John Dwyer. Thank you everyone.
